January 2007 Monthly Meeting Project
Mounting a Bird's Nest Fern

Here is the equipment you will need:

  • A cedar fence picket from a home improvement store cut down to size.
  • Some damp sphagnum moss.
  • 6 foot strand of fishing line (12 lb test).
  • About 24, 1.5 inch Phillips head all-purpose exterior screws.
  • One mounting hook.
  • A screw driver or drill, preferably electric.
  • Gloves - If you have any recent cuts on your hands, use gloves when handling spagnum moss.

Use a black magic marker to mark the location for the screws, as shown in the picture on the right.

Since there are two pieces of wood, use a piece of scrap and some screws to hold the two pieces together.
  •

Use a drill or a screwdriver to screw in the screws.
Larry shows the proper orientation for the fern.
Make a bed of sphagnum moss.
Place the fern on the moss and add more moss on top.
Run the fishing line around the screws and
over the moss to hold the fern in place.
    Insert the mounting screw.
